Sun Salutations - Peggy Cappy

Today, we are going to explore the beautiful practice of Sun Salutation. This sequence of yoga postures, also known as Surya Namaskar, is a wonderful way to start your day with a sense of peace, energy, and connection to the sun.

The Sun Salutation Sequence

Let’s begin with the first posture, known as Mountain Pose. Stand tall with your feet together, shoulders relaxed, and palms facing forward. Take a deep breath in and as you exhale, bring your hands to your heart center in a prayer position.

Sun Salutation - Mountain PoseNext, inhale and raise your arms overhead, stretching upward towards the sky. This is called Upward Salute. As you exhale, gently hinge forward from your hips and bring your hands to the floor. Bend your knees if needed.

Sun Salutation - Upward SaluteNow, step your left foot back into a lunge position. This is called High Lunge. Keep your right knee directly above your ankle and your left leg extended behind you. Inhale and reach your arms overhead, engaging your core for stability.

Sun Salutation - High LungeAs you exhale, step your right foot back to meet your left foot and come into a plank position. Lower your knees if needed and slowly lower your body towards the floor. This is called Chaturanga Dandasana, also known as Four-Limbed Staff Pose.

Sun Salutation - Chaturanga DandasanaFrom Chaturanga, inhale and press your palms into the floor to lift your upper body into Upward-Facing Dog. Keep your legs engaged and hips lifted off the floor. Straighten your arms and lift your chest towards the sky while gazing forward or slightly upward.

Sun Salutation - Upward-Facing DogAs you exhale, tuck your toes under and lift your hips towards the sky, coming into Downward-Facing Dog. Press your palms firmly into the ground and lengthen your spine. Relax your heels towards the floor and breathe deeply.

This is just a brief preview of the wonderful postures included in the Sun Salutation sequence. Each movement flows gracefully into the next, creating a beautiful dance between breath and body.
